Sharing Teaching 2021: real experiences by local teachers

We will be celebrating APRIR’s 45th anniversary in an online session featuring 6 (six) 20-minute presentations which explore locally relevant ideas for effective classroom practice in a rapidly changing educational scenario. The aim is to enhance our practice and strengthen our community through collaboration and networking.

Building Up Global Citizenship – 2021 Shanghai International Sister Cities Youth Camp by Graciela Bisquert

This presentation describes the experience of the virtual 2021 Shanghai International Sister Cities Youth Camp, in which 10 students from both public and private schools and a teacher  participated as Rosario’s ambassadors. In this context an international group meets regularly and practises speaking English as a second language.  Our students created a video about local Sustainable Development for the Sister Cities Forum. Teamwork and intercultural sensitivity have been key motivational factors.

Student Agency in Action during Pandemic Times by Silvana Calzia

During pandemic times it has been a real challenge to keep students engaged and active in their learning process. Integrating technology in the class has radically changed not only the planning but also the teaching strategies. Therefore, giving students agency to create content with pedagogical purposes has been at the core of these unprecedented times. Samples of projects will be shared so that teachers can implement tasks considering the diverse abilities learners are able to develop.

Breaking away from the coursebook: implementing digital escape rooms by Virginia Leguizamón

Digital escape rooms are live-action team-based games (Nicholson, 2016) and a perfect fit for the language class, as they engage learners in an exciting puzzle that can only be solved by communicating, collaborating, and thinking critically.
In this presentation, we will analyse escape room design applied to TEFL, focusing on a practical example of a breakout that can be adapted to suit your students’ levels and interests.

Curation as a 21st Century Skill – helping our students develop ideas by Luciana Ortega

One of the greatest revolutions brought about by the internet is the unlimited access to information. However, it is not uncommon to see our students struggling with the development of ideas when it comes to writing. There seems to be a mismatch between the overload of information available and our students’ ability to process such information. The activity proposed here aims at bridging that gap by helping learners develop a lifetime skill: curation.

The role of scenarios y fantasy in non-native Kindergarten pedagogy by Florencia Viale

This talk intends to debrief and socialize a yearly project carried out in order to foster intercultural awareness through the use of “scenarios”, thus introducing non-native Kindergarten students to the concept of Irishness and Celtic traditions.

Presenters’ Bios

Florencia Viale is an EFL as well as a Spanish as a FL teacher. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Educational Management, a postgraduate degree in Education and ICT and Diplomas in Alternative Pedagogies and Irish Studies. She has worked in Kindergarten for 18 years now. She is also a lecturer at Teacher Training and Translating College in the areas of English Language, Psycholinguistics, Social Studies, History and Literature of the British Isles. She has been delivering workshops and seminars locally, nationally and internationally since 2010. She is the author of stories for very young EFL learners.

Luciana Ortega is a teacher of English and Licenciada en Lengua y Literatura Inglesas graduated from IES “Olga Cossettini” and UCEL, respectively. She is currently attending a Master’s programme in Linguistic Theory and Language Acquisition at UNR. Luciana works at “Asociación Rosarina de Cultura Inglesa” and Instituto Superior “San Bartolomé”.

Virginia Leguizamón is a graduate from I.E.S. “Olga Cossettini”. She has worked in educational institutions at all levels, from beginner to advanced. She is a teacher at ARCI and an instructional designer at e-duTraining. Her main areas of interest are exam preparation, ICT, and online learning.

Mariana De Biassi is a Teacher of English and a Translator graduated from “IES “Olga Cossettini”, Rosario. She holds a “Postítulo de Formación Universitaria en Inglés” from Facultad de Humanidades y Artes, UNR. She has been a teacher at Asociación Rosarina de Cultura Inglesa since 1991, currently in charge of levels C1 and C2. She has also been Content creator at ARCI’s Multimedia Lab since 2002.

Silvana Calzia is a teacher of English and holds a bachelor degree in teaching English from CAECE University. She is currently studying Education and New Technologies at FLACSO University. She is a materials designer and has been teaching English for more than 15 years. She is currently teaching adolescents and adults, in different institutions including UNNOBA (Universidad Nacional del Noroeste de la Pcia de Bs. As.)

Graciela Bisquert is a Specialist in Educational Management and in Educational Practices in Context, FLACSO, as well as a Psychologist and Professor of Psychology, U.N.R. and a Technical-Scientific and Literary English<>Spanish Translator, IES “Olga Cossettini”. She received the Chan Gordon Scholarship, Western Carolina University, U.S.A. She was a Speaker at the conference ‘Cultural Practices in Global Educational Trends’, 5th Spectrum of Education Conference “Schools in the Future & Future of the Schools”, AFS, Istanbul, Turkey. She is currently Secondary School Principal, Escuela Normal Superior #2 “Juan María Gutiérrez” and Psychology professor at tertiary level, Escuela Normal Superior #1 and Escuela Normal Superior #2
