A subtle, beautifully layered portrait of domestic life. Through shifting perspectives and delicate details, Mansfield explores themes of identity, freedom, and the weight of everyday roles. It’s a story where small moments reveal deep truths.

September 20th: “Night in Tunisia” by Neil Jordan: In Neil Jordan’s “Night in Tunisia”, the narrator looks back on his teenage years and the complicated relationships he has with his father, sister, and a girl he notices in a yellow cardigan. His father, a jazz saxophonist, wants him to learn the alto saxophone, but the narrator’s attention is drawn elsewhere—towards the changes in his sister and the mysterious girl at the tennis courts. Set in a coastal Irish town, the story explores the narrator’s feelings of confusion and the subtle tensions within his family.

October 18th: “The Ex-Wife” by Ali Smith: In Ali Smith’s “The Ex-Wife,” the narrator describes a relationship strained by a third, almost spectral presence that takes up more and more space between the couple. At first, this presence feels like an intellectual fascination shared by the partner, but over time it becomes intrusive, unsettling, and even rivalrous, as if the narrator were competing with someone not quite there. The story explores how desire, obsession, and absence can destabilize intimacy, and how the narrator must eventually confront the loneliness and displacement that follow when love is shadowed by another devotion.

November: date and story to be confirmed

APRIR members:
July – August – September sessions: $14.000.
