Short stories with Mariela Burani
There is no pain, you are receding(Pink Floyd, Comfortably Numb)
A distant ship smoke on the horizon
You are only coming through in waves
Your lips move but I can’t hear what you’re saying.
A woman (a madwoman?) confined to a room, a husband we first meet literally falling out of the sky, a couple unveiling an old incident, town people gathering in the village square to carry out the annual lottery.
Stories where characters seemed to be adapted to the circumstances, but certainties begin to fade away the moment they start to scratch the surface.
In these four meetings, we are going to revisit some modern classic texts by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, John Cheever, Raymond Carver, and Shirley Jackson. There is always something new to explore.
How are we going to work?
We’ll email you the texts in advance so you can read them before the meeting. Jot down your impressions, your ideas and opinions. We’ll discuss them every other Saturday in an online Zoom meeting from 10 to 11.30, so you can feel the company of like-minded readers in spite of the physical distance.
