September 26th – 10 am: “Flowering Judas” by Katherine Anne Porter (1890-1980)
In this session, we will delve into Katherine Anne Porter’s “Flowering Judas” (1930), a
psychologically intense short story set in revolutionary Mexico. At its centre is Laura, a young
American caught between her ideals and the disturbing reality she inhabits. Through
disillusionment, moral paralysis, guilt and self-betrayal, Porter explores the difficulty of acting
in a world where familiar values no longer seem to apply. We will also examine the story’s
powerful religious and sexual symbolism, and the ways in which Porter transforms Laura’s
inner conflict into a haunting psychological experience.

You read the stories before the online session, jot down your impressions, ideas, and
associations and we discuss them on the date we meet on Zoom.
The texts will be sent by e-mail prior to the meeting, with enough time for you to read them.
