Reading Group: The Grandmothers

This month in APRIR Reading Group we read «The Grandmothers», a short novel by Doris Lessing

📅 Saturday July 25
⏰ 10 am – 💻 Online

How far can intimacy go before it unsettles the social order?

In «The Grandmothers» Lessing explores female friendship, desire, motherhood, ageing, and emotional dependency through the story of two women whose lives become intertwined in increasingly complex ways over decades.

Set against idyllic coastal landscapes and narrated with unsettling calmness, the novella challenges conventional ideas about family, love, and social taboos, while exposing the fragile boundary between freedom and emotional entrapment.

What makes the story especially disturbing is not scandal, but normality: the sense that the characters slowly drift into situations they themselves barely question.
