Perhaps you think that Black Britain is a contradiction in terms, or a coinage to describe a recent social change. Nothing could be further from the truth. However, standard historical studies have traditionally presented British history as a succession of triumphs by great white people – or rather, great white men – with accounts of racial struggle limited to the United States and South Africa.
In this presentation we will explore evidence that black people have inhabited Britain from time immemorial,
examine conflicts and resistance movements in the 20th and 21st centuries, and look at the achievements of men and women of African and Caribbean heritage along the centuries.
By bringing to the fore what has often been written out of history we will be able to understand the present through a different lens.
